又是一年高校结业季，受新冠疫情影响，当地时间5月20日，美国名校哥伦比亚大学（Columbia University）为2020届结业生举办了一场特别而难忘的线上结业典礼。这也是哥大建校史上初次举办虚拟结业典礼。

This year, the excitement usually associated with graduation was confined to a live stream for graduates at Columbia University. It’s a trend that will take shape around the U.S.as colleges and universities head into commencement season in the COVID-19 era.

校长布林格在致辞中表明，疫情之下大学承当起了更大的社会职责，将常识与举动结合在一起抗疫。



“咱们也见证了咱们的搭档为关爱遭到疫情影响的人，所展现出的令人惊叹的勇气、无私奉献的精力以及耐性。将常识与举动结合起来的力气，从未如此鲜活。我称之为大学的第四个方针，其他三个分别为科研、教育和公共服务。”

The power of joining knowledge and action has never been so vivid. I call this the fourth purpose of a university, along with research, education and public service.” Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger said at the virtual ceremony.

If the United States had begun imposing social distancing measures one week earlier than it did in March, about 36,000 fewer people would have died in the coronavirus outbreak, according to new estimates from Columbia University disease modelers.

And if the country had begun locking down cities and limiting social contact on March 1, two weeks earlier than most people started staying home, the vast majority of the nation’s deaths — about 83 percent — would have been avoided, the researchers estimated.
